Toxicology Laboratory:
The toxicology laboratory is a crucial component of medical, pharmaceutical, forensic, and addiction-related research fields, aimed at identifying, analyzing, and quantifying chemical compounds in biological and non-biological samples. These laboratories play an essential role in detecting various types of drugs, psychoactive substances, toxins, and environmental pollutants, helping to assess their effects on human health.
At the Iranian National Center for Addiction Studies, the toxicology laboratory employs advanced analytical techniques not only to detect and quantify illicit substances in suspicious samples but also to actively participate in scientific research and the development of novel analytical methods for studying the pharmacological and toxicological effects of various compounds. Furthermore, this laboratory collaborates on international quality assessment programs, such as the International Collaborative Exercises (ICE) , ensuring high laboratory standards and enhanced analytical precision. Multiple techniques are used to analyze purity and composition, including colorimetry, rapid test kits, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and gas chromatography (GC).
Beyond its research and diagnostic functions, the toxicology laboratory can play a critical role in policy-making for drug control and public health. The data obtained from this laboratory can serve as a foundation for developing strategies to combat drug addiction, regulate illicit substance distribution, and improve harm reduction and treatment programs. Additionally, this information can be used to analyzethe composition and purity of illicit drugs in the underground market, aiding in the identification of emerging drug trends and potential threats in addiction research.
